Choosing a Texas electricity plan
What is a good electricity rate in Texas?
Texas rates move with the wholesale energy market, so a "good" rate changes over time. Compare the average price per kWh at the usage closest to your home's. We show it at 500, 1,000, and 2,000 kWh, the usage levels on every facts label, and it includes delivery charges.
How to read an Electricity Facts LabelWhy does my rate depend on my ZIP code?
One regulated TDU owns the poles and wires for your address, and its delivery charge is the same on every plan. Plans and prices differ by TDU territory, which is why we show one service area at a time.
TDU delivery charges explainedShould I pick a fixed-rate or month-to-month plan?
A fixed-rate plan locks your energy charge for the contract length, so match the term to how long you'll be at the address. Month-to-month plans stay flexible, but the rate can change every month and usually runs higher.
Comparing electricity contract lengthsCan I switch electricity providers without losing power?
Yes. Texas is a deregulated market, so you can choose your retail electricity provider (the state's shopping program is Power to Choose). Switching changes the company that bills you, while your local TDU continues delivering power over the same lines.
How the deregulated market worksWhat fees can an electricity plan include?
Check each plan's facts label for the monthly base charge, minimum-usage fees or bill credits, and the early termination fee. If you move away from the service address, Texas rules generally let you leave a contract without paying the termination fee.
