What to look for with homes with solar and a battery

With solar and a battery, you can store self-generated or lower-cost energy and use it during more expensive hours. Compare both the export credit and the plan's time-based rates.

  1. 01

Weigh the export credit against stored energy

A battery lets you keep more of your own solar and avoid buying at the priciest hours. Compare the plan's export credit with what it charges for the energy you would otherwise buy back later.

  2. 02

Choose a plan built for batteries

General-purpose plans with free hours or usage credits can exclude homes with batteries or change terms at renewal. A plan designed for battery owners, with clear rules for charging and exports, is a steadier fit.

  3. 03

    Device programs and VPPs

Some plans connect to virtual power plant (VPP) or device programs that pay you to share stored energy during grid events. If your battery qualifies, include the program terms and payments when comparing plans.

How prices are shown

Each price is the plan's average price per kWh from its Electricity Facts Label at the usage for your kind of home: 500, 1,000, or 2,000 kWh a month, the levels every label must show. It includes the delivery charges CenterPoint Energy bills on every plan and all recurring charges, before taxes.

The monthly amount beside it is that price times the usage, to make differences easier to picture. It isn't a quote: your bill will vary with the kWh you actually use each month.

How plans are ranked

Your answers decide the order, and the same rules apply to every plan listed. No plan is placed by hand.

What kind of home
Sets the usage every price is compared at: about 500, 1,000, or 2,000 kWh a month. An electric vehicle or a pool moves it up a level.
Anything at home
Solar panels or a home battery show only plans built for them; with one but not the other, plans built for just that come first, then plans that also need the other. An electric vehicle moves plans with time-of-use pricing or EV charging features up the list. Plans built for an EV charger show only for an electric vehicle. With none of these (or only a pool), and for apartments, which aren’t asked, only plans that need no equipment show.
What matters most
Moves plans with that term up: a fixed rate for two years or more to lock in longer; month-to-month, six months or less, or no cancellation fee for no long contract; a fixed rate at any hour with no usage credits for a standard plan (solar and battery plans are left out); 100% renewable energy.
Price
A feature never outweighs the price. A plan priced more than 15% above the lowest-priced plan listed at your usage (25% for homes with solar or a battery) gets no match label and is listed after the others in its group.
One provider at a time
In the closest-match order, a provider’s third plan in a row waits behind the next plan from another provider, while there is one.
Popular in your area
Marks the plans homes nearby choose most often, when there are enough recent sign-ups to say so. It doesn't change the order.

Solar and home battery plans: FAQ

Is a time-of-use plan worth it with a home battery?

Often yes. A battery lets you charge when energy is cheap (overnight or from solar) and avoid drawing during expensive peak hours, so the wider the gap between off-peak and peak rates, the more a time-of-use plan can save you.

Do all electricity plans work with a home battery?

No. Some plans, especially ones with free hours or usage credits, exclude homes with batteries or other home generation, and terms can change at renewal. Check a plan's terms for battery rules, or choose a plan designed for battery owners.
