An ESI ID names the place electricity is delivered
ESI ID stands for Electric Service Identifier. Texas market rules assign a unique identifier to each point of delivery used in the ERCOT retail registration and settlement systems. In practical terms, it tells the electricity market exactly which service point a request belongs to.
The identifier stays with the service point rather than the resident or retail electricity company. If you move, you use the ESI ID at the new address. If a physical meter is replaced, its meter number can change while the service point's ESI ID remains the relevant location identifier.

When an ESI ID lookup is useful
Starting electricity at a new address
The exact identifier can prevent a request from landing on the wrong apartment, common-area meter, or similarly named address. Many setup flows can find it from the address, but having it ready is useful when a record is ambiguous.
Registering for meter-usage access
Smart Meter Texas and other utility-data workflows may ask for the ESI ID shown on the electricity bill so they can connect the correct service point.
Checking the delivery utility
The ESI ID record can confirm the utility responsible for the meter, wires, and outage response. That is separate from the retail electricity company that bills a customer in a choice area.
Resolving an address mismatch
A leasing-office address, building name, postal address, and utility service address can differ. Looking up the registered record helps reveal the format the electricity system expects.
Apartments and multi-meter properties
One street address can legitimately return several ESI IDs
Each separately metered apartment, duplex unit, guest house, or common area can have its own point of delivery. Include the exact unit in the search and compare the complete registered address before copying a result. If the result remains ambiguous, the safest checks are a bill for that unit, the leasing office, or the delivery utility.

What is an ESI ID?
An Electric Service Identifier, or ESI ID, is the unique number assigned to a Texas electricity point of delivery. It identifies the service location used in the ERCOT retail market; it is not the customer account number or the physical meter's serial number.
Where else can I find my ESI ID?
A current electricity bill normally lists the service address and ESI ID. You can also ask the delivery utility that owns the local meter and wires or the retail electricity company handling your service request.
Is an ESI ID the same as a meter number?
No. The ESI ID identifies a point of delivery, while the meter number identifies the physical meter installed there. A meter can be replaced without turning the ESI ID into the new meter number.
Why did the lookup return more than one ESI ID?
Apartments, duplexes, common areas, and homes with more than one separately metered service can share a street address. Confirm the exact unit or meter location before using a result.
Why can’t the lookup find my address?
The utility's registered service address can differ from the postal or property name. Try the complete street number and unit, add the ZIP code, or copy the service address from an electricity bill. New construction may not have a searchable service record yet.
Does my ESI ID change when I switch electricity companies?
Normally no. The ESI ID belongs to the point of delivery, not to the retail provider or resident. When you move, the new address has its own ESI ID.
