What to look for with a simple, standard plan

Not every home needs solar buyback or time-of-use pricing. If you want a predictable energy rate, here's how to find a straightforward fixed-rate plan.

  1. 01

    Start with a fixed rate

A fixed-rate plan locks your energy charge for the whole term, so the rate can't jump month to month. It's the simplest way to get a bill you can predict.

  2. 02

    Know how bill-credit pricing works

Some plans only reach their advertised rate within a specific usage range. For example, a credit may apply only between 1,000 and 2,000 kWh. Outside that range, you pay the underlying rate without the credit. A plain fixed rate keeps the energy charge the same at every usage level.

  3. 03

Check the fee and the term

Compare the average price per kWh at your usage level, review the monthly base charge, and match the contract length to how long you expect to stay.

How prices are shown

Each price is the plan's average price per kWh from its Electricity Facts Label at the usage for your kind of home: 500, 1,000, or 2,000 kWh a month, the levels every label must show. It includes the delivery charges CenterPoint Energy bills on every plan and all recurring charges, before taxes.

The monthly amount beside it is that price times the usage, to make differences easier to picture. It isn't a quote: your bill will vary with the kWh you actually use each month.

How plans are ranked

Your answers decide the order, and the same rules apply to every plan listed. No plan is placed by hand.

What kind of home
Sets the usage every price is compared at: about 500, 1,000, or 2,000 kWh a month. An electric vehicle or a pool moves it up a level.
Anything at home
Solar panels or a home battery show only plans built for them; with one but not the other, plans built for just that come first, then plans that also need the other. An electric vehicle moves plans with time-of-use pricing or EV charging features up the list. Plans built for an EV charger show only for an electric vehicle. With none of these (or only a pool), and for apartments, which aren’t asked, only plans that need no equipment show.
What matters most
Moves plans with that term up: a fixed rate for two years or more to lock in longer; month-to-month, six months or less, or no cancellation fee for no long contract; a fixed rate at any hour with no usage credits for a standard plan (solar and battery plans are left out); 100% renewable energy.
Price
A feature never outweighs the price. A plan priced more than 15% above the lowest-priced plan listed at your usage (25% for homes with solar or a battery) gets no match label and is listed after the others in its group.
One provider at a time
In the closest-match order, a provider’s third plan in a row waits behind the next plan from another provider, while there is one.
Popular in your area
Marks the plans homes nearby choose most often, when there are enough recent sign-ups to say so. It doesn't change the order.

Simple and standard plans: FAQ

What is a standard electricity plan?

A standard plan charges a single fixed energy rate for the length of the contract, without time-of-use windows, solar buyback, or usage-tier credits. You pay the same energy rate per kWh whenever you use electricity, while the total bill still changes with usage and other charges.

How do I pick a simple electricity plan?

Compare fixed-rate plans on the average price per kWh at your usage level, then check the monthly fee and contract term. Avoid plans whose low advertised rate depends on hitting an exact usage for a bill credit.
