What can you do with Smart Meter Texas?
Smart Meter Texas lets eligible customers view and download the readings from their utility meter. You can see monthly billing information, daily meter reads, and electricity use in 15-minute intervals.
Use it to find the day behind a high bill, check whether a scheduled load ran at the expected time, or measure a change before the next bill arrives. The meter shows when the home used electricity from the grid. It generally cannot identify the appliance responsible.
If you only need recent monthly totals, past bills or your provider's portal may be faster. Smart Meter Texas is most useful for daily detail, 15-minute patterns, or a longer meter history.
Who can use Smart Meter Texas?
Smart Meter Texas serves customers whose meters are operated by AEP Texas, CenterPoint Energy Houston Electric, Oncor Electric Delivery, Texas-New Mexico Power, or Lubbock Power & Light, the newest addition after Lubbock joined the competitive market. These are delivery utilities: the companies that own the local meter, poles, and wires. The official interface guide says the portal maintains 15-minute, daily, and monthly data for up to two years in those service territories.
Other Texas addresses may use a different municipal utility, an electric cooperative, a property submeter, or another data portal. If Smart Meter Texas does not recognize the service address, ask the company that owns the meter or the retail provider where to obtain interval data.
What do you need to create a Smart Meter Texas account?
Use a recent electricity bill for the exact service address. The person registering should be the customer whose name appears on that bill. The current form asks for an email address and three pieces of service information:
- The full ESI ID, which identifies the point where electricity is delivered.
- The meter number, which identifies the physical meter installed there.
- The retail electricity provider, meaning the company named on the bill.

The ESI ID may also be written as ESIID, ESID, or ESI-ID. Copy the complete value from the bill. If the bill is unavailable, the Texas ESI ID lookup can find many competitive-market service points by address. It cannot supply the meter number.
Do not enter the provider's account number where the form asks for a meter number. A meter replacement can also leave an old bill showing the previous meter number, so use the newest available statement if the utility recently changed the equipment.
How do you sign up for Smart Meter Texas?
The current residential signup form uses these steps:
- Open the Smart Meter Texas registration page. The Sign Up tab should be selected.
- Under Select Account Type, choose Residential.
- In User Information, enter the required name and email fields.
- In Security Information, enter Provide Full ESIID, Provide Meter Number, and Choose Your Retail Electric Provider.
- Enter Create User ID, choose a Language Preference, accept the terms, and select Sign Up.
- Follow the email instructions to finish account access, then confirm that the correct service address or meter appears.

What if Smart Meter Texas cannot match the account?
Check the customer name and service information against the newest bill:
- Confirm that the person registering is named on the bill.
- Confirm that the bill and ESI ID belong to the service address being registered.
- Copy every digit of the ESI ID, including any leading digits.
- Use the meter number, not the retail account number.
- Select the provider currently serving the address.
- If service started recently or the meter was replaced, wait for the records to update and try the newest bill information.
- For an apartment, confirm that the unit has its own utility meter instead of a property-owned submeter.
How do you view electricity usage after signing in?
The current Dashboard places the service details and report controls at the top, with the meter-read tools and usage graph below. To load a report:
- Choose a Report Type.
- Enter the Start date.
- Enter the End date.
- Select Submit Update.
- Review the Energy Data Graph and the data table farther down the page.
- Select Export My Report to save the selected report.

Get Current Meter Read requests the meter's current cumulative reading. It does not show which devices are running. Texas's advanced-metering rule requires secure access to usage data no later than the day after it was created, so use the interval graph for completed periods rather than live monitoring. Monthly Billing Information is the first choice when a bill's kilowatt-hour (kWh) total looks wrong. It is aligned with meter reads used for billing and is less likely to introduce a date-boundary mistake.
Daily Meter Reads are the clearest way to find a high-use day. Compare kWh per day rather than monthly totals when billing periods contain different numbers of days.
Energy Data 15 Min Interval is for time-of-day questions. It can reveal a repeated schedule, a changing baseline, or a long weather-sensitive load. It also creates far more rows, so opening it before identifying the relevant days usually adds work without adding insight.
How do you download Smart Meter Texas data?
For an ordinary spreadsheet, export the report already loaded on the Dashboard:
- Set the report type and dates.
- Select Submit Update and confirm that the expected data appears.
- Select Export My Report.
- Save the CSV.
CSV works with Excel, Google Sheets, and most analysis tools. Open the file and confirm the service address, first timestamp, and last timestamp before calculating totals.
What is Green Button Download My Data?
Green Button Download My Data is a standardized XML export intended for compatible energy applications. Choose Export My Report when you want a normal CSV. According to the official residential guide, a Green Button request covering more than 30 days is delivered by email instead of downloading immediately.
For a year of monthly totals, select Monthly Billing Information. Use Daily Meter Reads for a day-by-day history. Export a full year of 15-minute data only when you need time-of-day detail; it produces tens of thousands of rows. In any export, check the interval length and whether the file separates consumption from generation.
How do you read 15-minute electricity data?
Each interval value is energy in kilowatt-hours, or kWh, used during that quarter hour. It is not an instantaneous power reading. Four intervals make one hour, and a normal day has 96 intervals. Daylight-saving transitions can produce a different count, so use the timestamps instead of assuming every date has 96 rows.
What does 0.75 kWh in one 15-minute row mean?

A row showing 0.75 kWh means the service address used that much energy during the quarter hour. Dividing by 0.25 hour gives an average load of 3.0 kW during the interval. Several appliances may contribute to that total.
What patterns should you look for?
Start with two comparable days: one normal day and one day that needs explaining. Look for differences in four shapes:
- Overnight baseline: a persistent floor can include refrigeration, electronics, pumps, water heating, or HVAC. A higher floor means something ran more continuously, not necessarily that one appliance failed.
- Sustained afternoon rise: on a hot day, a broad rise that tracks outdoor heat is consistent with cooling, but pool equipment and other daytime loads can overlap it.
- Repeating rectangular block: a similar start time and duration can point toward a timer-controlled pool pump, EV charger, water heater, or other scheduled equipment.
- Isolated spike: a brief peak may reflect several loads starting together. One interval is rarely enough to identify the cause.
Read the shape before naming the appliance
An illustrative whole-home day with possible load patterns
For rough scale, 15 minutes of central air conditioning might add about 0.5–1.25 kWh, while Level 2 EV charging might add about 1–3 kWh. Equipment varies, and each whole-home interval combines everything running at the time.
Check a device's own history when it exists. An EV charger, smart thermostat, pool controller, or solar inverter can confirm whether its schedule overlaps the meter pattern. Without that second source, treat the interval shape as a clue.
A repeatable way to investigate a change
- Find the high month or billing period.
- Convert the total to average kWh per day so different period lengths are comparable.
- Find the unusual days in the daily report.
- Compare 15-minute data for one unusual day with a similar-weather, similar-occupancy day.
- Write down the likely scheduled or weather-sensitive loads during the changed hours.
- Change one safe setting or schedule, then compare several similar days afterward.

How does Smart Meter Texas work with solar?
A bidirectional utility meter measures electricity moving between the home and the grid. Use Smart Meter Texas for grid imports and exports. Use the inverter or solar monitoring app for total solar production.

When the home needs more electricity than the panels are producing, Smart Meter Texas can show consumption, meaning the net amount imported from the grid during that interval. When production exceeds the home's load, it can show generation, meaning the surplus exported to the grid.
For example, a home producing 4 kWh and using 5 kWh during an hour imports only the 1 kWh shortfall. Smart Meter Texas sees the 1 kWh import. The inverter records the 4 kWh of production.

Why might Smart Meter Texas data not match the bill?
Compare the same service point, date range, and type of reading before escalating a mismatch:
- Confirm the service address and ESI ID on both records.
- Use the bill's exact start and end dates instead of a calendar month.
- Compare the bill's kWh with Monthly Billing Information before summing thousands of intervals.
- Check whether the bill or meter record identifies an estimated, corrected, or replaced reading.
- For solar, compare billed imports and exports with the same direction in Smart Meter Texas. The inverter's production total measures something different.
Small differences can remain because the bill and dashboard may round values differently or reflect updated meter reads at different times. Even when the kWh agrees, the dashboard cannot reproduce the dollar amount without the plan. A bill can contain an energy charge, per-kWh and fixed delivery charges, base charges, bill credits, taxes, past balances, and other adjustments. The meter records energy, while Smart Meter Texas displays those readings; neither calculates the retail contract.
If a material mismatch remains after a like-for-like comparison—especially one that recurs or meaningfully affects the bill—ask the retail provider to explain which meter reads and dates produced the bill. The provider can coordinate a utility investigation when needed. Ask about the process and any possible fee before authorizing a meter test, and never open, unseal, or attempt to test the utility's meter yourself.

How recent is the data, and how much history is available?

Your account may show less when service began recently or the available meter history is shorter.
Can Smart Meter Texas tell which appliance used electricity?
No. It measures the combined flow at the utility meter. A repeating shape can suggest cooling, a pool pump, EV charging, or another load, but a device's controller, submeter, or circuit-level monitor is needed to identify it more confidently.
Why do I need both an ESI ID and a meter number?
They identify different things. The ESI ID belongs to the point of delivery, while the meter number identifies the physical meter. The meter can be replaced without changing the service point's ESI ID.
Can an apartment resident use Smart Meter Texas?

Does Smart Meter Texas show total solar production?
The utility meter reports net grid imports and surplus exports. Use the inverter or solar monitoring system for total panel production and combine the sources carefully if you want to estimate total household consumption.
What should I do if the portal and bill still disagree?
Verify the service address, ESI ID, exact billing dates, and monthly billing information first. Check for estimated or corrected readings. If a material or recurring same-period mismatch remains, ask the retail provider to explain and investigate the meter data used for the bill.
