What to look for with homes with solar

If you have rooftop solar, both the import rate and the export credit affect your bill. Here's how to compare solar buyback plans and understand how each plan credits the energy you send to the grid.

  1. 01

Look at the buyback rate, not just the energy rate

A solar buyback plan credits you for surplus energy sent to the grid. A lower import rate with a smaller export credit can cost more overall than a slightly higher import rate with a larger credit, depending on how much electricity your home imports and exports.

  2. 02

    Full retail vs. capped credits

Some plans credit exports at the full retail rate, others at a lower wholesale rate or only up to your monthly usage. Read the facts label to see how exports are valued and whether credits roll over.

  3. 03

    Price the whole formula

Solar homes may draw less electricity from the grid, so each part of the price formula carries different weight than it would elsewhere. Compare the import rate, any monthly charge, and the export credit together at your usage.

How prices are shown

Each price is the plan's average price per kWh from its Electricity Facts Label at 500, 1,000, or 2,000 kWh a month, depending on your home. It includes CenterPoint Energy's delivery charges and all recurring fees, before taxes.

The monthly amount is that price times the usage: an estimate, not a quote.

How plans are ranked

Your answers set the order, by the same rules for every plan. No plan is placed by hand.

What kind of home
Sets the usage prices are compared at.
Anything at home
Matches plans to your solar panels, home battery, or EV. Plans that need equipment you don’t have are listed after them or left out.
What matters most
Moves plans with that feature up: a longer price lock, no long contract, a simple fixed rate, or 100% renewable energy. With solar, it asks how exports are credited instead: at the real-time wholesale price, at a fixed rate, or at a high fixed rate of 5¢/kWh or more.
Price
A feature never outweighs price. A plan more than 15% above the lowest price at your usage (25% with solar or a battery) is listed after the others, unless you asked for a high buyback rate: that credit is what the higher price pays for.

Solar plans: FAQ

What is a solar buyback plan?

A solar buyback plan credits you on your bill for the excess solar energy your panels export to the grid. The credit offsets the energy you draw at night or on cloudy days.

How to compare solar buyback plans
What's a good solar buyback rate?

A larger export credit is generally more valuable, but it must be considered with the plan's import rate, monthly fee, and credit limits. Compare the buyback rate with the energy rate and estimate both against your home's actual imports and exports.

What is a real-time wholesale (RTW) buyback plan?

An RTW plan credits the electricity you export at the real-time wholesale price for your area, which changes every 15 minutes, while the energy rate you pay for imports stays fixed for the contract. Because export earnings vary with the market, the plan's base fee and energy rate often decide whether it costs less than a fixed buyback credit.
